CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE SOCIETY


CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1       Background to the Study

This research study is on Christian lifestyle and its effects on the society. Christians holding positions of influence in society is a good thing. In fact, it’s an essential thing, if the good news of Jesus is going to spread and the church is going to grow. What’s the purpose of living a Christian lifestyle? Choosing to make Jesus Christ the Lord of ones life changes our lifestyle dramatically. While formulate reasons for the way Christian lives, God’s purpose for lives never changes. The Christian life is a life of faith. It is by faith that they enter into the Christian life, and it is by faith that they live it out. Christian life begins by coming to Christ for forgiveness of sin, they understand that what they seek cannot be obtained by any other means than by faith. Christian cannot work their way to heaven, because nothing they could ever do would be sufficient. According to Cook, Michael, those who believe can attain eternal life by keeping rules and regulations—a list of do’s and don’ts—deny what the Bible clearly teaches. “But that no one is justified by the Law in the sight of God. ‘The just shall live by faith’" (Galatians 3:11).

            The Christian life is death to self in order to live a life that pleases God. The society today , is characterised with lots of civil unrest, lack of peace and harmony, social vices, bad habit or criminal behavior, which include gambling, violence and thuggery, exam malpractice, pre-marital sex, pornography, masturbation, lesbianism/homosexuality, drugs/substance in-take and abuse and other forms of immoral behavior among other. The ways Christians live their life can positively influence the society to reduce these vices and abnormality...
1.2       Statement of the Problem
            The society today is characterized with lots of civil unrest, lack of peace and harmony, social vices, bad habit or criminal behavior, which include gambling, violence and thuggery, exam malpractice, pre-marital sex, pornography, masturbation, lesbianism/homosexuality, drugs/substance in-take and abuse and other forms of immoral behavior among other. The study is to look at the ways Christians are to live their lives to impact these negative influence. The study also seeks to suggest and recommend to Christian on how to control these negative influence on their lifestyles.
The research problem will also be to investigate on how well the Christians has contributed to the societal values and norms and how the Christian lifestyle can influence the societal values and norms.
1.3       Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to examine Christian lifestyle and its effects on the society: using Assemblies of God church Ora-section as a case study.
Other specific purpose are to ascertain and explores the concept of Christian living, the impact Christian lifestyle have on the society, the challenges Christians faces in living the lifestyle of a Christian, and to know how well has the society feel the lifestyle of Christians and proffering solutions to some challenge Christians face in trying to impact the society positively, and making recommendations on how Christian lifestyle can make positive impact on the society.
1.4       Significance of the study
This study is intended to benefit Ora-section of the Assemblies of God church Owan District, Nigeria in particular and other Christian bodies beside the Assemblies of God Nigeria. The research will also assist other researchers conducting research in similar area of study.
1.5       Research Questions
These research questions intended to guide the researcher in the course of the study are
1.      What is the Christian lifestyle all about?
2.      What impact does the Christian lifestyle have on the society?
3.      What challenges does Christians faces in living the lifestyle of a Christian?
4.      How well has the society feel the lifestyle of Christians?
5.      How has worldliness materialism and excessively love for money affected Christians lifestyle negatively?
1.6       Scope of the Study
            The focus of this study is on Christian lifestyle and its effects on the society: using Assemblies of God church Ora-section as a case study. This research will do an in-depth study on the pastors and members of the six (6) churches spread across the six (6) villages in Ora, Owan west Local Government Area of Edo State.  
1.7       Research procedure
            The population of this study consist of pastors, Deacons and Deaconesses, Departmental leaders, Sunday school workers and baptized members. These people are considered suitable respondents because these are the ones considered to be Christians in the Assemblies of God church for they have gone through the tenet of faith which contains the doctrines of the Church and as such they are born again Christians. It’s across Ora section of the Assemblies of God, church Nigeria.
            This research was conducted to achieve the goals and objective of the research. Sampling method in the six (6) churches in Ora-section. Data were gathered and examined for true representation. The research is predominantly library internet and filed investigations. Libraries to be visited include Nigerian Advanced School of Theology (NAST) Library Ewu, Edo State and private library in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
1.8       Definition of Terms
 Christian: A person who has received and confess Jesus Christ as His Lord and personal saviour. It can also be seen as a follower of Jesus Christ.
Christian lifestyle:  A Christian demonstrating his or her belief by living the way Christ lived, doing what Christ did, and avoiding what Christ avoided. A way of life that reflect the life of Christ, or patterning out lives after the life of Christ.
Effect: A change which is as a result or consequence of an action or other cause.
Society: The aggregate of people living together in a community.
