CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background
to the study
The phenomenon of conflict covers a wide range of
human experience. Conflict is as old as the family institution and it exists in
many spheres of life. It is a process that begins when one party or group
perceives that another party or group has negatively affected, or is about to
negatively affect something that the first party cares about. There does not
seem to be any narrowly defined path leading to an understanding of conflict.
Rather the path leads the researcher into a maze of interconnected fields of
knowledge and experience. This means that there are a number of avenues that
could be pursued in order to penetrate the field. The route chosen needs to be
appropriate for a given purpose. John Burton, a theorist in the study of
conflict makes this point: “Conflict, its resolution and prevention, is
inevitably a study which knows no boundaries of thought. It involves the whole
person, the nation or identity group of the person, the political system, and
the physical environment...
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The problem of this study is to
examine the biblical concept of
conflict resolution for peaceful co-existence among members in the church. Conflict is always
about change. It is about change in social structures, religious, institutions,
and in human relations at many levels. Those who promote one form of change
enter into conflict with those whose interest is to promote another or both are
resisted by those opposed to all change. In regard to conflict and change there
are therefore, always likely to be two sets of issues in any conflict: what
changes shall occur at whose expense.
Thus, conflict is about learning and adapting to change...
1.3 Purpose of the study
The main
purpose of the study is to examine the biblical concept of conflict resolution for peaceful
co-existence among members in the church (A case study of Assemblies
of God, Nigeria).
The other objectives of the study
are:
1. To
identify the relationship between conflict resolution and peaceful co-existence
among the members in the church.
2. To
examine the biblical concept of conflict resolution and peaceful co-existence
among the members in the church.
3. To
access the impact of biblical principles
on conflict resolution.
4. To investigate the nature of biblical instruments
to conflict resolution and peaceful co-existence among the members in the
church.
1.4 Research Questions
1. Are there interplay between conflict resolution and peaceful co-existence among the
members in the church?
2. Are members in the church living in
conflict or in peaceful co-existence?
3. Can
biblical application resolve conflict and bring peaceful co-existence among the members in the church?
4. Can
biblical techniques resolve conflict and bring peaceful co-existence among the members in the church?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The reason conflict resolution is so
difficult is that we’re hesitant to place ourselves in uncomfortable
situations. We’re also frequently unwilling to humble ourselves enough to admit
that we might be wrong or to do what it might take to make amends if we are
wrong. Those who do conflict resolution best are often those who would prefer
not to confront others about their sin, but still do so out of obedience to
God. If the matter is relatively minor, it may be that the best thing to do is
to practice forbearance and overlook the offense (Proverbs 19:11). If it cannot
be overlooked, one must pursue reconciliation. This is such an important issue
to God that peace with Him and peace with others are inextricably entwined
(Matthew 5:23–24).
1.6 Scope of the Study
The research study will be limited to biblical concept of conflict
resolution for peaceful co-existence among the members in the church (a case
study of Osun District of Assemblies of God, Nigeria.
1.7 Limitation of the study
Insufficient
finance tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the
relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data
collection.
The
researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work.
This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work. Other
constrain are time factors, hoarding of information from researchers.
