CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 1.1 Background
of the study
The
will of God for us is that we are united, that is why Jesus prayed in John 17
that his disciples would have unity. He prayed in verses 20-23, “I do not ask
on behalf of these alone, but for those alsowho believe in Me through their
word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You,
that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believethat You sent Me. The
glory which You have given Me I have given to them, thatthey may be one, just
as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may beperfected in unity, so
that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved
Me”.
There
has been a lot of confusion on the issue of church unity, so we need to distinguish
division from other distinctions or separations between Christians. Division is
not Christians being in different groups or denominations. Sometimes this is the result of division, but
not necessarily. And we should
definitely not understand Christian unity as organizational. According to the New Testament, Christian
unity is spiritual and personal (Eph.4:2,3).
In other words, it is possible for Christians
to be in different groups or denominations and still be unified... Division
is not Christians in the same group disagreeing and vigorously debating--even
to the point of starting new groups.
This is called issues-oriented conflict, and it is inevitable and even
desirable (within limits) in Christian ministry. Christians who care about ministry will
disagree over how to most effectively get the job done. When this happens someone always calls it “division.” But it is possible to disagree, debate, etc.
without having a division.
1.2 Statement
of the Problem
The
Church of Jesus is increasing in division instead of unity. This disunity mostly
comes in form of cell division. Churches are splitting, church seminars against
division are increasing as reconciliation consultants are also increasing in
members, yet division abounds consequently,
denominations continue to grow in number due to social inequality as the
causal mechanism. Theoretically, orthodoxy would confess that unity is possible
through the giving of Christ’s glory...
1.3 Purpose
of the study
The
purpose of this study is to examine the factors responsible for disunity among
believers. in the church.
- To know the biblical and theological warning
against divisions of fellowship
within the Body of Christ.
- To know what effects had division caused the church not
to grow in recent time.
- To know whether the Church is actually in alignment
with Scripture, and how that should affect the behavior of Christians
today in their role of glorifying God.
- To profer solutions and a way forward for unity of
believers.
1.4 Research Questions
1. Are believers in divine overcomer’s church
have a biblical and theological knowledge of the warning contained in scripture
about disunity?
2. Are there possible effects of
disunity among divine overcomers’ members in Ekpoma?
3. Are members of divine overcomer’s
church living in allign with biblical truth concerning disunity?
4. What possible solution can one
derived from this study in order to influence unity in divine overcomers’
church , Ekpoma?
1.5 Significance of the
Study
This
study will contribute to the body of knowledge of Christian’s obedience in
lightof Scripture in that it seeks to identify and then justify that paradigm
of acceptable schisms or, permissible divisions.
Secondly,
it will save as a teaching material to today’s church. Thirdly, it will bring
about help to church growth. The researcher aimed at identifying the
implications of clearer understanding so that believers who are participating in
any acts of division may understand the error or validity of their actions.
Division in churches must be clearly defined if it is permitted in the
scripture.
1.6 Limitation
of the study
Insufficient finance tends to impede the
efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature
or information and in the process of data collection.
The researcher will simultaneously engage
in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the
time devoted for the research work. Other constrain are time factors, hoarding
of information from researchers.
1.7 Delimitations of the
Study
This
study centers on The Effects Of Disunity in the Church And Its Remedies: A Case Study Of Divine Overcomers Church, Ekpoma, Edo
State.T
1.8 Definition of terms
effect: A change
which is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.
Disunity: disagreement between two or more groups, typically producing
tension or hostility
Church: a building used for public Christian
worship.
