THE EFFECTS OF PERSONAL EVANGELISM IN CHURCH GROWTH

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

The primary task of Christians in the world is to go into the world in order to preach the Goodnews to all creatures, a command which was given by Jesus Christ. Evangelism is the spreading of Christianity to all the people in the earth and it is done by evangelist, missionaries, priests and pastors. Spreading the world of God to all mankind is our primary duty to him. Evangelism is the proclaiming of the Christian Gospel, or by preaching the word of God to his people. “Evangelism may be the single most important thing church leaders can do if they want their church to grow”. The growth of the church will depend on the leader as well as to the members.[2]

The term “growth” suggests mobility and change, it indicates a dynamic reality, where there is growth, there is increase expansion, development and multiplication or reproduction. Where there is no growth, there is stagnation, inertia, illness and potential decay. So there is importance and necessity of church growth. Because it is God’s will: God so love the world that the world will be saved through Jesus Christ. 1.2       Statement of the Problems

Our churches are no longer houses of prayer equipped to reach the lost. Churches have lost their focus on making disciples who will thus be equipped and motivated to reach the lost. Christians do not want to share the truth of the gospel for fear they will offend others. Most churches have unregenerate members who have not received Christ themselves. Our churches have too many activities; they are too busy to do the things that really matter, instead of focusing on personal evangelism. Also, people use personal effort evangelism without the Holy Spirit, this become frustrating.  Personal evangelism can not yield the desired result to church growth, if it is being done without the proper method.

1.3       Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study it to examine the effects of personal evangelism in church growth: a case study of Assemblies of God, Nnewi District. Other specific purpose would be to;

1)     Investigate whether Assemblies of God, Nnewi District had a good knowledge of personal evangelism to cause church growth

2)     Examine whether Assemblies of God, Nnewi District had been practicing evangelism with the intention of church growth.

3)     Investigate whether there are problems facing personal evangelism effort to church growth in Nnewi District.

4)     Give suggestions for ways to improve personal evangelism to cause church growth.

1.4       Research Question

1)     Has Assemblies of God, Nnewi District a good knowledge of evangelism that leads to church growth?

2)     Had Assemblies of God, Nnewi District been practicing evangelism for the purpose of church growth?

3)     Are there possible problems facing personal evangelism for church growth in Assemblies of God, Nnewi District?

4)     What possible suggestions can be proffered to enhance personal evangelism for church growth in Assemblies of God, Nnewi District?

1.5       Significance of the Study

This research study will explore the concept of personal evangelism and its effects on church growth and clearer ways for effective personal evangelism, it will also help individual, organization and different churches to discover the power in personal evangelism, thereby enhancing the ability to communicate evangelism effectively, it will also contribute to learning in the area of missions and evangelism.

Therefore, it will be of immense resource material to  churches leaders, ministries, pastors, theologian etc in discovering the crucial roles play in advancing the Church. From this research, we will discover what a healthy church is like and how personal evangelism can boost church growth.

1.6       Scope of the Study

 The scope of the study is majored on the effect of personal evangelism in church growth using Assemblies of God, Nnewi District as a case study. This stand with good character to people around me and my house hold, personal evangelism start from my house to my village to my town and my Local Government. All these area needs to hear my preaching in words and in character.

1.7       Limitation to the Study

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work. Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection ( questionnaire and interview).

1.8       Definition of Terms

Effect: an effect is a change which is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.

Personal Evangelism: it’s a personal witness of the gospel with another.

Church Growth: is a movement within evangelical Christianity which focuses on developing methods to grow churches based on business marketing strategies.
