ASSESSMENT OF SUNDAY SCHOOL IN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD NIGERIA

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study.

This study is on the Assessment of Sunday school in Assemblies of God Nigeria: A Case Study of Edo District. Sunday School has been among the key methodologies of the past two centuries to train adults and youth in the depths of the Bible. Experts are saying us that the Sunday school still works. Sunday school has played a key role in the health of a church accomplishing its mission. This is because of the nature and mission of a church revealed in the Scriptures, and because of the centrality of the Bible in Sunday school, the Sunday School is at the heart of the mission of the church....

1.2       Statement of the Problem.

When there is lack of proper or inadequate Sunday school curriculum, it will have an adverse effects on the overall performance of the programme. The Sunday school curriculum concerns, the lessons outlined to be taught and strictly followed in the Churches. For many years these lessons have been taught without any, kind of assessment... 

1.3       Purpose of the Study.

This study examine various platform to assess the Sunday school in Assemblies of God, Nigeria, using Edo District as a case study. Other specific purpose will be to examine the nature, identify the contents of Sunday school curriculum in Edo District, and examine the impact so far made and to correct every negative or weakness in the Sunday school that may be found. To critically assess the Sunday school curriculum and to enable us know its strength as to what extent it had achieved its objective is the purpose of this project.

The relationship between those who pay offerings regularly as means of contribution to the development of Sunday school and defaulters. The relationship of adherents to classes within the period which Sunday schools were held in the Edo District. Examine how Sunday school started in Edo District. Investigate the teaching materials and the curriculum of Sunday school in Edo District.

1.4       Research Questions

1.      When did Sunday school start in Edo District?

2.      What are the teaching materials and the curriculum?

3.      What are the problems of the Sunday school?

4.      What factors led to the growth of Sunday school?

1.5       Significance of the Study

The study would be of immense help to all who are involved in Sunday school program, Christian education, teachers and all workers in the Sunday school department in the following ways. It shall serve as resource for students who are interested in research studies especially those studying Sunday school programme. It will enable all the teachers and workers in the Sunday school to know the goal and objectives of the Sunday school curriculum and this will serve as direction to them. This will help all stakeholders in the Sunday school to identify areas of weakness in the methods and correct it promptly. This will lead to revitalizing the operations of Sunday school by instilling new zeal in the workforce. Having this understanding will help the body of Christ to grow appropriately that would lead to periodical reviewing Sunday school method in compliance with meeting the challenges posed by growing trends of the Twenty  First Century.

1.6       Research Procedure

This research is carried out in Assemblies of God, Edo District. The study used the library and field design which incorporates a questionnaires method of operations and was administered to respondents. Data were collected and analyzed to measure the assessment of Sunday school in Assemblies of God, Edo District.

1.7       Delimitation of the Study.

            This study was limited in scope to this research will cover selected churches in Assemblies of God, Edo District. Edo District covers four Local Government Areas in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State in Edo land, namely Oredo, Egor, Ovia South West and part of Ovia North East Local Government Areas.

1.8       Definition of Terms

Assessment: are a variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students.

Sunday: is the day adopted by Christians for church service.

School: A school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers.

Sunday School: Sunday school classes usually precede a Sunday church service and are used to provide catechesis to Christians, especially children and teenagers, and oftentimes adults as well.
