IMPACT OF THEOLOGY OF PEACE AND HARMONY ON SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF HEBREW 12:14.

 A THESIS

CHAPTER ONE

                                                                     INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the study

Human beings over the years pay much interest in peace from the ancient time until now. According to Harbin (2005) the word peace, apart from being a pleasant word, also refers to the absence of war in a society. Harris (2011) is of the perspective that peace is the greatest and highest goal or hope that everyone wishes to achieve personally and collectively. In Oredo local government area in Edo state, people have been trying by all means to live in peace and harmony, which is very far from them. Because of the lack of peaceful coexistence among Oredo people it has resulted in societal underdevelopment. Konow  (2003) opined that, human beings, in one aspect, is the history of searching for peace. Peace has been talked, thought, taught and studied in many ways and many aspects....

In our society today, Gene (2011) stated that, all manner of social vices,  civil disturbance or hostilities and criminal activities among others has drained the peace and harmony in the society (p, 47). The biblical concept of peace and harmony is larger than that and rests heavily on the Hebrew root slm, which means "to be complete" or "to be sound." The verb conveys both a dynamic and a static meaning" to be complete or whole" or "to live well." According to Raymond (2006), the noun for shalom had many nuances, but can be grouped into four categories: (1) shalom as wholeness of life or body (i.e., health); (2) shalom as right relationship or harmony between two parties or people, often established by a covenant...

1.2       Statement of the Problem

The absence of peace and harmony in the society will degrade the developmental advancement of the people. This may even escalate into social unrest, killing, violence and negative thinking and destruction of life and properties. This is because, according to Page (2008) peace is a product of a positive mental attitude, while violence is the result of negative thinking (p, 97). It is also evident that, the lack of peaceful coexistence among Oredo local government area of Edo State has resulted in societal underdevelopment in all ramification....

Parsons (2017) opined that, peace and harmony is the natural state of society; violence is an unnatural state. These unnatural state is characterized with improper activities (social vices, civil disturbance, hostilities and criminal activities, cybercrime, immorality among others) that are hazardous to societal development, mostly in Oredo local government area of Edo State. According to Oyinola (2015), the absence of peaceful co-existence will bring about suicide, immorality, strife, absent-mindedness, instability and spiritual weakness...
