PRAYER IN OUR CONTEMPORARY CHURCHES: A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED CHURCHES

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study.

Prayer is at the same time the greatest and most unused resource that Christians have. It ought to be the first recourse and the most used resource we have. There is nothing that cannot handle. If it weren’t for times like these we wouldn’t pray at all. It is the trial and suffering that makes people pray. Many people can testify that they do their best and maybe their only real praying when there is a crisis. Yet it seems that many do not understand prayer and some other do not pray enough.

Contemporary ministers strive and eagerly long for qualitative growth; however, the problem does not seem to get better. As a solution to this difficult reality that the Nigerian Church is encountering, in this project, the researcher will investigate the weapon of prayer on churches...

1.2       Statement of the Problem.

Every church prays in its own way and manners. However, how much prayer contributes to church growth and supernatural advancement of these churches, mostly in selected churches (the Assemblies of God church, Christ Apostolic Church, Redeem Christian Church of God, Mountain of Fire Ministry) in Asaba Metropolis. Even if they pray, they pray little. It seems less than the biblical injunction to pray without ceasing. The disciple of Jesus said to him, teach us how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13). That signified that, there is how to pray effectively for prompt results.

1.3       Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study will be to examine prayer in our contemporary churches: a case study of selected churches. This purpose is to explore the concept of prayer in our contemporary churches, ascertain the level of prayers in our contemporary churches, examine the challenges of in-effective prayer in Asaba Metropolis churches and proffer ways to overcome these challenges.

1.4       Research Questions.

1.   What is the efficacy of prayer in our contemporary churches?

2.   What are the kinds of prayers that can be effective in our contemporary churches?

3.   Are the churches praying enough?

3.   What are the challenges affecting prayer in Asaba Metropolis churches?

4.   What are the ways to overcome the lackadaisical attitude to prayers?

1.5       Significance of the Study

This research study will be of immense benefit to churches, Pastors, church members and youth leaders, missionaries and church planters, theologians and researchers. It will encourage all to pray more with greater zeal. To churches in Asaba Metropolis it will be of immense benefits and assistance to churches, in that it will help the church to view how the Bible presented prayer to better the life of people and enhance the purpose of God on the churches. To Pastors, church members and youth leaders would benefit from the intercessory prayers and other department in church and future researchers. To missionaries and church planters it will equally be relevant for missionaries and church planters as it will serve as a foundation and a guide for their missionary work. To the theologians, it will increase their perspective and knowledge on effectiveness of prayer in our contemporary churches. And to the researchers, it will create a platform for going into further studying on prayer.

1.6       Research procedure

The researcher will employ library and field.  Data will be collected through questionnaire that were distributed to respondents in selected churches (the Assemblies of God church, Christ Apostolic Church, Redeem Christian Church of God, Mountain of Fire Ministry) in Asaba Metropolis in Delta State for the purpose of gathering information through prepared questions and examined for true representation. The research study were predominantly library, internet and field investigations. This research was conducted to achieve the goals and objective of the research.

1.7       Delimitation of the Study
