ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
This research was on Evangelism: A
Tool for Soul Winning and Implication for Church growth, a case Study of Assemblies
of God Esan District. Evangelism and soul winning is the proclaiming of the
Christian Gospel, or by preaching the word of God to the lost sheep with an
intention to rescue them back to God. “Evangelism may be the single most
important thing church leaders can do if they want their church to grow”. The
church is the body of true believers who have trusted in the redemptive work of
Christ, who is God in flesh. Those who have trusted in Christ by faith alone,
are members of the true church.
The development and growth of the church will depend on the leader as well as the members.[1] This study examined Evangelism: A Tool for Soul Winning and Implications for Church Growth.
1.2 Statement
of the Problem
Evangelism is the
preaching of the gospel or the practice of giving information about a
particular doctrine or set of beliefs to them with the intention of converting
others to the Christian faith. Churches in the world today seem to be much less
evangelistic than they were in the recent past. They are reaching
non-Christians only half as effectively as they were years ago. Churches today
measure membership by number of people persuaded by the members to the church
without minding whether they are members of other churches. They also woo
members from other churches to our church and celebrate them as converts. The
trend is disturbing...
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study was to examine Evangelism: A Tool for Soul
Winning and Implications for Church Growth: Assemblies of God Esan District as
a Case Study. More specifically to explore the concept and relationship between
evangelism and church growth, ascertain the hindrances to evangelism, explore
many sided weapon of evangelism on church development and growth, the Biblical
basis for evangelism and the effects of evangelism on church growth.
1.4 Research Questions
1. What are the relationship between evangelism and church development?
2. What are the
hindrances to evangelism and church growth in Esan District?
3. Is evangelism still
effective today?
4. What are the
Biblical basis for evangelism on church development and growth in Esan
District?
5. What are the effects
of evangelism on church growth in Esan District?
6. How can the zeal for
evangelism be revived?
1.5 Significance
of the Study
This study will be of immense importance to the church members, ministers of the gospel, Christian, theologians and researchers alike. To the church members, it will increase their knowledge of the power inherent in evangelism to develop and grow the church. To the ministers of the gospel, it will equip them for effective evangelizing and how they can judiciously utilized soul winning for the development and growth of the church. To the theologians it will prompt them to have a working knowledge on how evangelism can be used to facilitate development and growth in the church. To the researchers it will be to them as a resource material in developing further studies.
1.6 Delimitation of
the Study
The scope of this study is limited to
Evangelism: A Tool for Soul Winning Implications for Church Development and
Growth: Assemblies of God, Esan District as a Case Study. Esan District covers
two Districts. Esan Central and Esan East District respectively, all these are
situated in Edo state in the southern part of Nigeria. Esan District has a
population of about 17,000 members.
1.7 Research Procedure
This research was
carried out in Esan District of Assemblies of God under Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State. The study used the descriptive
survey design which incorporates a questionnaire
method of operations and it will be administer to respondents. Data
will be collected and analyzed to measure the effects of evangelism as a tool
for Soul Winning for Church Growth. The population is about 17,000 members,
with a fraction of 60 respondents for this study.
1.8 Definition
of Terms
Evangelism: the spreading of
the Christians gospel by public preaching or personal witness.
Soul Winning: is an act of drawing the lost soul back to his God
for salvation.
Church Development: refer to an improvement in all ramification
of the church.
Growth: is a gradual
development in maturity, age, size, weight or height.
