DISCRIMINATION ON FEMALE MINISTERS IN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CHURCH NIGERIA.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study.

This study examined the discrimination of female minister. The Assemblies of God Nigeria especially in Edo District’s position on female minister do not favour them with key leadership position  in the church, but instead puts them in the minority compare to  other denominations.[1] Female ministers are diligent, steadfast, hard-working and can deliver at the same frequency of the male counterpart.

A female minister is a person ordained and authorized by a church, or other religious organization, to perform functions such as teaching of beliefs; leading services such as weddings, baptisms or funerals; or otherwise providing spiritual guidance to the community. The term is taken from Latin minister ("servant", "attendant"), which itself was derived from minus ("less").[2]

 1.2       Statement of the Problem.

There is perhaps no more hotly debated issue in the church today than the issue of women serving as pastors. It is very important to not see this issue as men versus women. There are women who believe women should not serve as pastors and that the Bible places restrictions on the ministry of women, and there are men who believe women can serve as pastors and that there are no restrictions on women in ministry. Supernatural manifestations and gifts of the Holy Spirit have played a distinctive role in the origin, development, and growth of the Assemblies of God especially Edo District.

The gifts God gives to female minister ends up in a container, which have made our male ministers in the ministry to discriminate and underestimate the capacity of female ministers to perform.  Today, female ministers have not be given opportunity to be a minister of a church, District Superintendent among others because of discrimination.  This study therefore, will proffer measures to remedy this discrepancies among female ministers in Edo District.
