INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study.
This study is on
the Evaluation of the Giving Ministry in the Church: A Case Study of Assemblies
of God, Edo District. In the words of Matthew, Giving is a command from God and
He expects everybody to obey this command especially Christians. As Christians,
God called every one into the ministry of giving and every believer must give
unto others because it is Christian’s duties.[1]The
researcher will introduce the church into the act of giving as a ministry. It
is a ministry because the bible calls it so in 2 Cor. 9:12-13 (NLT) saying, “So
two good things will result from this ministry of giving. As a result of your
ministry, they will give glory to God”. (Paraphrase).
According
Maureen, believer responsibility to giving is primarily a response to God’s
generosity. According to the Bible, abundant blessings imply weighty
responsibilities; “for everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be
required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more”
(Luke 12:48).[2]
McGavran Donald, stated thatall believers know about giving but not everyone knows the importance of doing so. Giving is an act of righteousness that comes from ones’ duty as a human to help others, it is also called Charity. In the bible, believes read about the charity of giving and also how God uses people to bless others or how people were moved by the spirit to give. Giving is God's nature, and this can be seen in the word of God. He is the first giver because he gave this earth for men to live and He gives indifferent ways.[3]
There are many
types of giving, but the researcher is going to focus on MONETRY giving because
it is very controversial and many people do not like the idea of giving money,
especially to churches.
McCord Hugo, argues that the greatest mistake researchers has observed in Christians attitude when it comes to giving in the church is when they see their giving as a way of enriching the church and not as doing what God commanded. Due to this fact, Christians are the most complainers when it comes to finances and breakthroughs.[4]....
1.2 Statement of the Problem
It seems that giving
has been greatly misunderstood, among Church folks. Appropriate cognizance of its impact on the
unity and growth of the Church, has not been thoroughly considered. Moreover,
it seems that the Church no longer understand and abide by the instruction to
give which calls for greater concern. This was notthe situation at the early
Church. The Scriptures says in the book of Acts 2:44 - 47, 44”All the believers
were united and shared everything with one another. They made it their
practice to sell their possessions and goods and to distribute the proceeds to
anyone who was in need. United in purpose, they went to the Temple every
day, ate at each other’s homes, and shared their food with glad and humble
hearts. They were praising God and enjoying the good will of all the
people. Every day the Lord was adding to their number those who were being
saved." It is on this premise that the research topic: Evaluating the
Giving Ministry in the Church: A case Study of Assemblies of God, Edo District,
is embark upon.

Edo District is one of about forty-six (46) Districts and Areas that make up
the General Council of Assemblies of God Church in Nigeria. The research will

parents. These people are considered suitable respondents because majority of
them have read books and listen to teachings on Giving and also, many have
served at different levels of their lives in the Giving Ministry.
Pastors and
Departmental leaders are the suitable respondents because their sole
responsibility is to care and nurture their members. Parents are also
qualified, because their duty to care for their families is similar to that of
Pastors, and individual family makes up the Church.
