CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
This study intend to show how much education of pastors is important to the moral development of the church, especially, the churches in Abuja East District of Assemblies of God Nigeria. Abuja East District comprises of people from different backgrounds, ethnic groups, many tribes and languages and culture as well in Abuja, and do to these, the social life of the people is very unique in their own way...
The pastor need
to understand the people in order to communicate effectively. The processes
which the pastor takes in knowing their culture, values, norms and acceptable
behaviour in order to communicate effectively the principles of moral living in
the Bible is what we known as education for service, which if any pastor lack,
he or she may not do well in the ministry.
The
pastor is the servant of God and the angel of the church to oversee it in
representation of God. The pastors education is very important to the moral
development of the church. The pastor is a teacher, preacher of the word of
God. He is the shepherd and the nurturer of the church.
Education is a vital instrument used in molding an individual into having acceptable behaviour, attitudes, norms, values among others and being useful to him or herself and to the society at large. Education makes an individual to be aware of him or herself and the talent embedded in one...

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study is set to investigate the role of pastor’s education on the moral development of the church in Abuja East District of Assemblies of God Nigeria. The problem in Abuja East District is precisely the negligence of Pastors towards education. 1.3 PURPOSE
OF THE STUDY
The
general purpose of this study is to investigate the role of pastor’s education
on the moral development of the church in Abuja East District, of Assemblies of
God Nigeria. Specifically, other objectives are to:
1.
Examine the moral
problem of members affecting the church in Abuja East District of Assemblies of
God, Nigeria.
2.
Find out the factors
responsible for the moral problem of members in Abuja East District of
Assemblies of God, Nigeria
3.
Discover the extent
poor education of pastors is affecting the moral development of the church in
Abuja East District of Assemblies of God, Nigeria.
4.
Proffer or suggest
relevant solution to enhance the moral development of the church through
pastors’ education in Abuja East District of Assemblies of God, Nigeria.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research questions were formulated to guide
the study
1 What are the moral problems of members
affecting the church in Abuja East District of Assemblies of God?
2 What are the factors responsible for the
moral problems of members in Abuja East District of Assemblies of God, Nigeria?
3 To what extent has poor education of pastors
affecting the moral development of the church in Abuja East District of
Assemblies of God, Nigeria
4 What is the possible and relevant solutions
to the enhancement of moral development through pastors education in Abuja East
District of Assemblies of God Nigeria?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This
work is hoped to benefit many individuals and group of persons, these includes,
the pastors, general council, districts, sections, general public and
researchers.
Pastors: Pastor being a vital
figure in the church and in the research, it hope that the study will impact
immensely on the pastors to understand the role of education in ministerial
work and the impact it has in moral development of the church.
General Council: It is hope that
the findings of the research will serve as an eye opener to the general council
on the role of pastors’ education on moral values of the church. This may
enable the general council to take right decision on moral development of the
church.
Districts: The findings of the
study may serve as reference material to the church district on the area of
pastors’ educational impact on moral development and growth of assemblies of
God church.
Sections: It is also believed that
this research may impact positively on the section of the church based on the
fact that moral value has a vital role to play on church growth. This may bring
to the section of the church the role of pastors’ education on moral
development in the church.
General public: the study may be
beneficial to the general public in such that it may be an eye opener so as to
enable the public to know the role of pastors’ education on moral development
of church.
Researchers: The work may serve as
reference materials and guide to other researchers who trade in this line.
1.6 DELIMITATION
This study is delimited to the role
of pastors’ education on the moral development of church in Abuja East District
Assemblies of God Nigeria. The study is delimited to Abuja East district
Assembly of God churches which are located in Garki, Lugbe, Gwagwalada,
Kuchingogro, New Layout, Kabusa, Airport, Dagiri, Kwali, Abaji, Kuje, Rubochi
and Kpada section..
1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The following are the limitations of the study:
financial constraint, time constraint, lack of research materials,
environmental constraint and distance to cover. These are basically challenges
faces during and after the research.
Financial
implication: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the
researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information
and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time
limit: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with
other academic and personal religious work. This consequently will cut down on
the time devoted for the research work.
Distance to be cover: The distance
covered for gathering of materials for the research (questionnaire and
interview) consequently will affect and slow down the work. These are part of
the limitation encountered during the research.
1.8 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This
study is guided by Kohlberg’s moral development theory (1958).
Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory
Kohlberg’s moral development theory
was propounded by Lawrence Kohibergin (1958) According to Kohlberg’s learning
or moral education theory, the moral development is based primarily on moral
reasoning and it unfolds in stages. Kohlberg arrived at his views through the
report of unique interview sessions which he had with learners after presenting
them with a series of stories on moral dilemmas. He identified three main
levels of moral reasoning in learners, with two stages within each level
through those stories (Kholberg, 1976, 1986)...
1.9 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
Role: Is a set of behaviours, obligations, norms and
values as that pastors and members are supposed expected to exhibit for the
moral development of the church.
Pastor:
A
mature child of God that is called into the ministry with the maturation of
thinking processes of all kind in order to bring about moral development in the
vineyard of God,
Education:
The aggregate of all processes by
means of which a pastor or members of the church develops abilities, attitudes
and other forms of behaviour of positive
value to the church and society in which they live. Education is a means by
which a pastor ensures moral development in the church.
Pastors Education: Is the training
received, knowledge acquired, skills obtained for the purpose of successful
ministering. Pastoral education allows a pastor to gain from the learning and
experience of more mature Christian leaders, professors, who often provide a
wealth of wisdom and ministry experience, theological training, and self-studies.

Development:
Development
involves the utilization of available human and material resources in more
efficient ways that brings about improvement in the well-being of people.
Development is a product of attitudinal change resulting in better ways of
doing things.
Moral:
It concerned with the principles of right and wrong or conforming to standards
of behaviour and character based on those principles.
Moral Development: Moral
development is the process through which children, individual, pastors develop
proper attitudes and behaviours towards other people in the church and society.
It’s also based on the improvement in moral functioning in the church and
society.
