CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Culture in its widest usage is the totality of a
people's way of life. Language is one of the most important aspects of a
people's identity because it is the most common medium of communication. The
agent of Christianity is the church, the community of people who make up the
body of believers. Culture is generally seen as the way of life of the people.
Religion being a major component of culture happens to be the place of contention with the cultural beliefs of the people. Christianity is not a culture, but the Christian faith can be expressed and communicated only through cultural media. To be a Christian is to accept Jesus Christ and His teachings as preserved in the Christian scriptures and maintained by the Church of one's choice. The question as to what constitutes authentic Christian tradition is complicated by the existence of numerous Christian denominations....
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Christianity
in Assemblies of God Ewu to a great extent upholds a different culture which
most times are contrary to the thing of God. Converts who are won to the church
are sometimes faced with the challenge of upholding the Christian belief and
managing the cultural beliefs they upheld before joining the church. This has
been an area of concern to especially pastors who seek ways to separate their
members from those traditional practices especially the negative aspects. Cultural
people also brings their culture to the church, even practices some of their
tradition in church. This problem necessitated this research.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The
purpose of this study is to examine Culture and Its Devastative Effects on
Christianity: A Case Study of Assemblies of God, Ewu. Specifically to;

Examine whether there are
relationship between culture and Christianity.

Examine the influence
of culture on Christianity in Assemblies of God, Ewu?
3.
Ascertain whether Christianity
have anything to do with culture.
4.
Explore the possible
way to overcome these issues in Christianity.
1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Significance of the Study
The research study will be of immense
benefit to church leader and members of the church. It will exposed the danger
that culture post on Christianity. It will also be of benefits to the members
of the church. It will enlighten them on the devastating effects culture have
in the church. Researchers will also benefit from this study because it will
serve as a resource material in developing further studies.
1.6 Delimitation of the Study
The delimitation of this study is limited to Culture and Its Devastative Effects on Christianity: A Case Study of Assemblies of God, Ewu. Assemblies of God, Ewu is located in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo state, Nigeria.
1.7 Limitation of the Study.
The researcher will simultaneously engage in this
study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time
devoted for the research work. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency
of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or
information and in the process of data collection (questionnaire and
interview).
1.8 Definition of Terms
Culture: The acts, customs and habits that
characterize a particular society or nation
Devastative:
to
lay waste or make desolate; ravage; destroy. It is also to confound or
overwhelm, as with grief or shock.
Effects:
an effect is a change which is a result or consequences of an action or other
cause.
Christianity : An Abrahamic religion
based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and various scholars who wrote the
Christian Bible.
