1.1 Background to the Study
This study examined Christianity and Culture: Implications on
Dressing, A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church, Edo Central District.
Christianity is a religion that is based on the belief and teachings of Jesus
Christ. Culture in its widest usage is the totality of a people's
way of life. The agent of Christianity is the church, the community of people
who make up the body of believers. The agent of culture is the language,
dressing and the people mode of doing things. All these (Christianity and Culture) have one
way or the other it affects the dressing of individual(s).
Dressing is an act of putting on clothes. Importance of wearing clothe on the body is in order to protect, beautify or adorn it. Clothes are one of the basic necessities of man. In its widest sense, it includes a great range of material that man wears or applies to the body. Clothing includes dresses, shoes, jewelry, hairdo and make- up. Clothing is also used to show people’s status and the roles they play in society. The clothe someone decides to wear influences the impression people have about such an individual. It also tells about the culture or religion such a person comes from. It can also affect the person’s comfort and self-confidence. The dressing pattern of an individual is a kind of “sign language” that communicates a complete set of information and is usually the basis on which immediate impressions are formed...
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Christianity to a great extent upholds a different culture which most times are contrary to the thing of God. Converts who are won to the church are sometimes faced with the challenges of upholding the Christian belief and managing the cultural beliefs they upheld before joining the church. Christianity and way of dressing today has become worrisome, especially the females. They dress in such manner, all with an aim of looking tantalizing, sexy and attractive instead of dressing in a responsible way. They wear short clothes, bum short, short blouse, miniskirts/gown, cleavage shirts, sagging of trousers by boys and even girls are the major problems associated with indecent dresses today. As if this ugly act is not enough, some people also wear transparent clothes, thereby revealing their body anatomy which ought not to be seen in public. These dressing patterns are many with more still coming up due to the progressiveness of fashion.
