CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study.
This study dealt with the Relevance of
Spiritual Formation in the Contemporary Church: A Case Study of Assemblies of
God, Esan District. The concept of spiritual formation is a process of being
conformed to the image of Christ. It is also a state of having relationship with
God that shapes our being rather than a technique or method or program for
self-improvement.
The importance
of spiritual formation in the life of a Christian cannot be over
emphasized because it refers to the spirit driven process of forming the inner world
of human self in such a way that it becomes like the inner being of Christ
himself. It also refers to the intentional communal process of growing in our
relationship with God and becoming conformed to Christ through the power of the
Holy Spirit. The process changes a person’s inner and outer life.
To advance spirituality is to get to know the one we see in the mirror, to learn the purpose that we came to accomplish on this plane to love, to spread joy, and help others, and at the same time learn lessons that advance our heartfelt understanding...
The spiritual renewal activities normally includes sufficient quest for biblical truth; fervent prayer life in individual; thought about eternal things more than earthly desire; having quiet-time with God and worshipping God in truth and spirit. It is God’s intention as revealed in the book of Ephesians 4:13 that the people be taught the word of God until they grow to maturity in the knowledge of God.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Esan District of Assemblies of God Nigeria, based on the topic of the study, it observed that there are some spiritual deficiencies in the church which is not helpful for the progress of the church, and also not in line with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ (the head of the church). The spiritual deficiency include the followings: inadequacy of prayer life in the life of members, insufficient quest for biblical truth, that is, reading the bible without fresh revelation and application of the truth. The knowledge they acquire is treated as facts and not applied to their lives. Hunger about eternal thing seems to be less important, one pardoning his own sin with self-righteousness and by saying “The Lord knows I am just dust” or “That is the way I am”. When issues about spiritual discussions become embarrassments. For example, discussion about things that are convicting and witnessing to the Lord makes them uncomfortable...
