IMPACTS OF THE CHURCH ON THE SOCIETY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study.                                                                                       

            This study deals on the Impact of the Church on the Society: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church Edo Central District. The society we are in today is characterized with lack of peace and harmony among each other, filled with civil unrest, social vices among others. The church holds the key to the problems of the society. The church is one of the paramount agent of peace and harmony in the society. One may ask, what is the church? Is the church a building? Is it the place where believers gather to worship? The purpose of the church is two-fold. The church comes together (or assembles) for the purpose of bringing each member to spiritual maturity (Ephesians 4:13). The church reaches out (scatters) to spread the love of Christ and the gospel message to unbelievers in the world (Matthew 28:18-20). This is the Great Commission. So, the purpose of the church is to minister to believers and unbelievers... 

1.2.      Statement of the Problem

Our society today is characterized with lot of crisis, conflict and all manner of civil unrest. In our society, you will see fighting, kidnapping, smoking, cultism, Fulani Herb’s men, arm robbery, prostitutions among others. All these have capacity to jeopardised the peace and harmony of the society and even cause disunity. The church is known as an advocate of restoration of peace and glory to a society. Jesus Christ gave His Church a body of spiritually transformed believers and a responsibility to carry out his mandate. The Church’s mission is to preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God and make disciples throughout the world, teaching them exactly what Jesus taught, maintaining development and growth in the society. (Mark 16:15; Matthew 24:14; Matthew 28:19-20). However, there has been increased cases of disruption in the society, killing,  and civic unrest, hence the need for this research work.

1.3       Purpose of the Study.

This study examined the Impact of the Church on the Society: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church Edo Central District. Specifically, the study seek to ascertain the concept of the church and society, the characteristics of the church and society, the challenges of the church in the society, measures to overcome the challenges of the church in the society and the impacts of the church on the society.

4.         What are the challenges of the church in the society?

5.         What are the measures to overcome the challenges of the church in the society?

1.5.      Significance of the Study.    

The study is of immense benefit to the church, society, government, theologians and researchers.  The study will enhance the Church to  play an active role in bringing salvation to the world. It stands as the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).  It will increase the working knowledge of church leaders on the role of the church in ensuring a greater society. The society at large will find this research work as a solution to their cries and worries. The society will also acknowledge the important role the church play in ensuring peace, growth, and development in the society. To the theologians it will prompt them to have an adequate knowledge on the role of the church in ensuring peace and development in the society. This work will assist the government on how they can maintain and ensure peaceful coexistence in the society. To the researchers it will be a resource material for them in developing further studies.

1.6       Research Procedure                                                                                                 

The researcher employed library and field investigations.  Data was collected through questionnaire and oral interviews that was distributed to respondents in Assemblies of God Church Edo Central District for the purpose of gathering information through prepared questions and examined for true representation. The research study was predominantly library, internet and field investigations. This research was conducted to achieve the goals and objective of this research study; which was to find out the causes and the solutions to or how to deal with unforgiving spirit.

1.7       Delimitation of the Study.                                                                                        

The scope of this study is on the Impact of the Church on the Society: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church Edo Central District. Edo Central District cover four Local Government Area of Edo  State. They are Oredo, Egor Ovia South West and part of Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State with over 15,000 members, 130 pastors, 145 branches, and 35 Sections.

1.8       Definition of Terms.                                                                                                

Impact: the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another.

Church: a building used for public Christian worship or it can also be regarded as a place of worship where people (Christians) come together to worship, prayer and serve a supreme being called God.

Society: The aggregate of people living together in a community.
