MORAL DECADENCE AMONGST YOUTHS IN THE CONTEMPORARY CHURCH

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study.

This study deals with Moral Decadence amongst Youths in the Contemporary Church: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church Jeddo Section. There is concern in several quarters that at the rate Moral Decadence among the youth and its impact on the church is making waves in the society; the likely tendency is that there might be serious breakdown of law and order which might lead to anarchy. It is said that a lawless and immoral youth is prone to chaotic situation and anarchy. An ideal society is that which is devoid of violence, civil disorder, with minimal rate of crime and immoral practices cum unethical standards...

1.2       Statement of the Problem.   

Moral decadence among youths in the church are coined in the following as: social vices, abuse, stealing, sexual misconduct, immorality, promiscuity, fraudulent, indecent dressing, false appearance, pretense among others. In churches today most youths have turn the church into a social affairs, bringing the things of the world into the church, which does not glorify God.  Morality among the youths have been degraded in the church. The church have become worldly

and the world churchy, because of moral decadence. Hence this research study to attempt to profer solution to these issues.

1.3       Purpose of the Study

This study examined Moral Decadence Amongst Youths in the Contemporary Church: As A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church Jeddo Section. Specifically, the study seek to ascertain the concept of moral decadence among youths, the causes of moral decadence among youths, effects of moral decadence among youths in the church, and measures to overcome moral decadence among youths in the church.

1.4       Research Questions.

2.   What are the causes of moral decadence among youths?

3.   What are effects of moral decadence among youths in the church?

4.   What are the measures to overcome moral decadence among youths in the church?

1.5       Significance of the Study     

The study is of benefit to the youth, ministers of the gospel, theologians, members of the church and researchers. To the youth, it will eradicate moral decadence among youths in the church, and to the ministers of the gospel, it will  increase the knowledge on how to tackle immoral youth among members in the church, and to theologians , it will expose them to the nature of the extent of moral decadence among youths in the church, while to members of the church, is for  them to have a working knowledge of moral decadence among youths in the church and how to put a stop to it, and to researchers, it will be a resource material for further studies.

1.6       Research Procedure

The researcher employed library and field investigations.  Data was collected through questionnaire and oral interviews that will be distributed to respondents in Assemblies of God Church Jeddo Section for the purpose of gathering information through prepared questions and examined for true representation. The research study was predominantly library, internet and field investigations. This research was conducted to achieve the goals and objective of this research study.

1.7       Delimitation of the Study

This study is limited in scope to Moral Decadence Amongst Youths in the Contemporary Church: As A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church Jeddo Section. Jeddo Section is under Sapele District with 4 churches, 5 Pastors and 800 members.

1.8       Definition of Terms

Moral: refer to those things that are against moral values. It is also refer to as a vices ranging from Arm-robbery, Cultism, Political thuggery, Religious fanaticism and other nefarious activities that are detrimental to the peace of humanity.

Decadence: moral or cultural decline as characterised by excessive indulgence in pleasure or luxury.

Moral Decadence: is the process of behaving in a way that shows low moral standards.

Youth: the term can be used to refer to any young person between the ages of 18-35 years.

Contemporary: living or occurring at the same time.

Church: a building used for public Christian worship or it can also be regarded as a place of worship where people (Christians) come together to worship, prayer and serve a supreme being called God.
