WORSHIP AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CHURCH GROWTH

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study.

This study deals with Worship and Its Implications for Church Growth: A Case Study of Selected Churches in Ekpoma Metropolis. Worship is a state (an attitude) of spirit. It’s an internal and individual action, which should be done from the depth of one’s heart, regardless of place or situation. When the church formally gather together in worship, their emphasis should be on individual worshiping of the Lord. The church need to be aware that they are worshiping God fully on an individual basis.

The nature of worship is from the inside out and has two equally important parts (worshiping in spirit and in truth). The church must worship “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24) to experience growth. Worshiping in the spirit has nothing to do with one’s physical posture. Since external actions are unimportant in worship, there is no rule regarding whether one should sit, stand, fall down, be quiet, or sing praises loudly while in corporate worship. These things should be decided based on the nature of the congregation. The most important thing is that one worship God in spirit (in our hearts) and in truth (in our minds.) It has to do with their innermost being and requires several things that this study will unveil...

1.2       Statement of the Problem.

It seems that the worship of most churches in Ekpoma Metropolis has turn away from God to man, instead of reverencing God. Worship in churches are mostly done carnally and worldly, which result in the stagnation of the church. Worship should be done in spirit and in truth. This is lacking in the church today, as churches in Ekpoma Metropolis now engage in mere singing, dancing, playing secular music and calling it worship unto God. This has restricted and reduced the power and manifestation of the move of the Holy Spirit to cause growth in the church.
