CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1          Background to the Study

This study dealt with Church Leadership and Its Implications in Church Growth: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church, Edo East District. Church leadership is viewed as a process that includes influencing the task objectives and strategies of a group or organization, influencing people in an organization to implement the strategies and achieve the objectives, influencing group maintenance and identification, and influencing the culture of the organization. It is a process of motivating people to work together collaboratively to accomplish great task. Church leadership is the lifting of a man’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a man’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a man’s personality beyond its normal limitations. A leader maybe bring out his/her best when people barely know that he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worst when they despise him...

1.2       Statement of the Problem.

Leadership is a serious responsibility that calls for utmost dedication, discipline, commitment and sacrifice among others. It will become a frustrated exercise in operation with visionless leaders in the church. The challenges of leadership in the church encompass a lot of areas that include; lack of literacy of biblical leadership, lack of leadership training, lack of vision and capacity to carry people along.   When these are lacking in leadership it becomes an obstacle to the growth of the church...

1.3       Purpose of the Study

This study examined the Church Leadership and Its Implications in Church Growth: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church, Edo East District. This is to ascertain that the growth or the decline/retaiment in growth in the district is as a results of effective/ineffective leadership in the church. If that is the issue, then this study is to find out what are the challenges to effective leadership and to profer the measures to comeback the challenges of Church Leadership and the Implications on Church Growth.

1.5       Significance of the Study     

         The study is of immense benefit to ministers, theologians, members of the church and researchers. This study will equip the ministers with the necessary leadership traits for an effective leadership in the church. It will prompt theologians to have a working and practical knowledge of church leadership and how they operate in the church. Members of the church will be exposed to the knowledge of how leaderships operate and how they can fit in. This study will serve as a resource material to researchers in developing further studies.

1.6       Research Procedure

This study employed the used of library and field investigations. Data was collected through questionnaire and oral interviews that was distributed to respondents in Assemblies of God Church, Edo East District for the purpose of gathering information through prepared questions and examined for true representation. The research study was predominantly library, internet and field investigations. This research was conducted to achieve the goals and objectives of this research study; which are to find out the causes and the solutions to or how to deal with leadership challenges.

1.7       Delimitation of the Study

This study was on Church Leadership and Its Implications in Church Growth: A Case Study of Assemblies of God Church, Edo East District. Assemblies of God Church, Edo East District has 38 Sections, 180 Pastors and about 20,000 membership spread across four local government areas, which are Ikpoba Okha, Uhumwonde, Orhionmwon and Oredo  Local Government Areas.

1.8       Definition of Terms.

Leadership: Is an act of leading and influencing others who willingly follow their instructions on what needs to be done, how to do it, and the process of seeing it accomplished. 

Church: Is the body of Christ that is gathered together to reverence, pray and worship God among others.

 Church Leadership: In this context, is a church that is characterized by robust and effective leadership trait that is capable of leading a church to all round advancement and growth.

Implications: The action or state of being involved in something.

Church Growth: Is a systematic improvement and advancement of the church in all ramifications.
